THE PEARL FISHER

 

There's a moment in the desert that leaves the observer completely captivated.

It happens when day gives way to night and the sky transforms, taking on shades of black and blue, amid the stars that enrich the celestial vault, keeping the moon company.

A breathtaking panorama, there's no doubt about it. Unique and irresistible. Almost as if it wanted to draw you in.

The pearl fisherman lies there supine, enjoying the view of the starry vault.

It's his turn on guard. Pirates could at any moment attack the agile boat loaded with pearls and fabrics, thwarting the efforts needed to transport the goods from Oman to Yemen.

The fisherman lets himself be pampered by the lapping of the water, a sound that takes him back to his youth, and he lets himself be caressed by the Shamal trade winds, the wind that over the years has tirelessly shaped the desert dunes down there in Oman. And while the Shamal blows softly but incessantly, carrying with it scents of dates mixed with those of burning incense, the pearl fisherman stands there in ecstasy, savoring his fruit to resist the temptation of sleep.

He finds himself in a state of half-sleep and ends up dreaming. The images that pass through his mind transport him to a distant place where nothing is earthly, everything seems light and random, the toils of the day leave the body and the soul is uplifted.

 

Legend says: The pearl was formed when a drop of rain managed to pass through the water and penetrate the shell, thus transforming the water of the sky, in the depths of the sea, into a precious jewel.
