I’m putting the finishing touches on a decadent display of macarons

when an impossibly chic Parisian woman enters the bakery. She balances a lush bouquet of freesias in one arm and shopping bags in the other. Her strawberry-blonde hair is tousled just so. As she walks through the shop, perusing our selection, a heady aroma of blond tobacco mingles with the vanilla-dipped pastry cases. Excuse me. Her voice is soft and rich. She points to a cake adorned with roses and figs.

 

This, please. I move toward her, dazed, exhausted from working before dawn.

I lift the cake dome.

Her voice, muted by a glass case, is immediately amplified. "Delicieuse," she murmurs.

What follows is a blur. One moment, I'm lifting the heavily laden cake from its perch. The next, it tumbles through the air, sending the toppings flying. We all hit the floor. Woman, me, cake. Freesias bloom everywhere. There's cream in her hair and streaks on my cheek. We look at each other, too stunned to speak. But then she starts laughing. The sound of music echoes throughout the shop. I help her up and try to wipe the crumbs off her silk blouse. Delicious, delicious!

When I wake up, my mouth is watering.
