I'm at my favorite summer snowboarding spot, looking out over the expansive alpine terrain. My skin tingles inside my snowsuit. I take a deep breath, turn up the music, and launch myself into my flight down the mountain. The fresh air fuels me as I carve effortlessly through the pristine snow. It's the perfect rush. But then, I feel myself losing control. I'm collapsing. It's like an endless fall when I finally stop. The music is gone. I lost my headphones along the way. The silence is even louder than the thumping of my songs. Nearby, I see the entrance to a cave. I unclip myself from my board and step inside. Enormous crystalline salt formations shimmer in the dimly lit space. The air itself is cool, dry, and saline. I reach out to touch the wall of salt, but the ground gives way beneath me. The next thing I know, I'm enveloped in heat. Steam rises around me, filling the air with a metallic quality.

 

When the fog lifts, I realize I'm in a hot spring, its crystalline water shimmering with minerals. Someone familiar emerges from the shadows. I know him but can't name him. He hands me a thermos filled with a spicy, cardamom-scented drink. The taste takes me back to my childhood. The tension in my shoulders melts away, and I'm no longer confused about where I've landed. I take another long sip and exhale.
