D.S. & DURGA Radio Bombay EDP 10 ml
I'm fascinated by the idea of hypothetical scent. Not everything has a strong or immediately perceptible aroma, but objects can suggest a fragrance. Light bulbs glow. Electricity flows through their metal filaments. They melt the dust on their surfaces, emitting curls of heat. Amplifier tubes have a certain aroma. When my '69 Fender Deluxe warms up (after a monstrous, unleashed solo), the back of the amp emits a warm, dusty, greasy metallic scent: the smell of backstage in a damp room.
What if a tube amplifier were housed in an old radio made of sandalwood? Then the interaction of heat would open its pores, releasing its smooth, elegant fragrance—wafts of musk cedar, peach, coconut, lactones, milk.
Real sandalwood essence is perfection. I often wear it pure. It smells of India, of effigies, of purity, of concentration. Unfortunately, it has been overused, so perfumers no longer use Mysore oil.
Radio Bombay is a deconstruction of Mysore sandalwood, reconstructed from all the aspects described above. I imagine the radio sitting in a small, hot shop in Bandra—the "Brooklyn" of Bombay (sorry). The heat deconstructs the oils in the wood. Raga melodies and Geeta Dutt songs crackle from its tiny speaker in the bustling city.
