To make most great flowers sing, the perfumer must employ the "dissonant notes" found in nature. A tuberose without the hint of mushroom and earth will never seem real. Nature does an amazing job of balancing unpleasant notes with sublime ones, which is why we love flowers (and, more importantly, pollinating insects and animals do!).

 

For years, I've tried to create a great tuberose perfume. Some were subtle, but they usually smelled like "tuberose perfume," not the flower itself. I tried many different approaches, until after analyzing a sample for several days, I began to detect nuances of melon, mushroom, and rot, along with the slippery, grass-green freshness of the petals and its haunting tea note.

 

Durga uses the largest amount of tuberose absolute I've ever seen in a perfume. The supporting cast only adds to its richness. This fragrance is the pinnacle of what we do; A fragrance inspired by the raw materials we perfumers live for and seek. I understand why Jean Patou called his fragrance Joy. Sometimes it's just that simple.

 

Top notes: green tuberose, melon, chrysanthemum

Heart notes: ylang-ylang, orris butter, orange blossom

Base notes: tuberose absolute, jasmine sambac, precious musk
