Music is essential to life. I was born into a blues-soaked home—my dad is from Chicago. At 9, I went camping on an island. Some older, cooler punk kids introduced me to the Misfits and the Pixies (one of those kids was none other than comedian Rob Delaney).

 

That summer was dominated by Doolittle. The provocative lyrics. Frank Black's shrill laugh. I absorbed it in the summer heat. The August humidity. Young first loves.
