New England is characterized by the juxtaposition of the picturesque and the imposing. Like the lands of New England's ancestors (English, Irish, Scottish), the mountains are not gigantic, but they are majestic. There are no Himalayas, Rocky Mountains, great lakes, or deep chasms. Yet, entire folk tales inhabit the cracks and crevices of the earth. Caves are gateways to sorcerers' lairs. Valleys are guarded by protective deities. The scale may seem modest, but the lands evoked beyond are infinite.
