Japanese forests are home to numerous trees whose wood is considered sacred in traditional religious ceremonies. The connection with the forest is established through ritual offerings that include incense made from these rare woods.

 

The sturdy Hinoki wood has been used for temples, Noh theaters, baths, and masu. Hinoki from the Kiso Forest was used for the sacred Ise Shrine in Mie Prefecture. The Sawara Cypress is a sturdy "false" cypress with a lemony scent and fibrous red bark; its wood is also used for temples and shrines and grows wild on the islands of Kyushu and Honshu.

 

The Asahi zuru maple is an ancient maple variety native to Japan, characterized by beautifully ornate leaves in shades of pink, white, and green. Its name means "swan at dawn."
